Fear God, Not People

12:1 Meanwhile, ¹  when many thousands of the crowd had gathered so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus ²  began to speak first to his disciples, “Be on your guard against ³  the yeast of the Pharisees, ⁴  which is hypocrisy. ⁵

17:23 Then people ⁶  will say to you, ‘Look, there he is!’ ⁷  or ‘Look, here he is!’ Do not go out or chase after them. ⁸ 

Lukas 20:46

20:46 “Beware ⁹  of the experts in the law. ¹⁰  They ¹¹  like walking around in long robes, and they love elaborate greetings ¹²  in the marketplaces and the best seats ¹³  in the synagogues ¹⁴  and the places of honor at banquets.

Lukas 21:8

21:8 He ¹⁵  said, “Watch out ¹⁶  that you are not misled. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ ¹⁷  and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them!

[12:1]  ² tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[12:1]  ³ tn According to L&N 27.59, “to pay attention to, to keep on the lookout for, to be alert for, to be on your guard against.” This is another Lukan present imperative calling for constant vigilance.

[12:1]  ⁵ sn The pursuit of popularity can lead to hypocrisy, if one is not careful.

[17:23]  ⁶ tn Grk “And they will say.” The plural in Greek is indefinite, referring to people in general. Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[17:23]  ⁷ tn The words “he is” here and in the following clause are understood and have been supplied from the context.

[17:23]  ⁸ sn Do not go out or chase after them. There will be no need to search for the Son of Man at his coming, though many will falsely claim its arrival.

[20:46]  ⁹ tn Or “Be on guard against.” This is a present imperative and indicates that pride is something to constantly be on the watch against.
